World Polio Day, 24 October 2019

  • Submitted by: Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 24 September 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-19057

That the Parliament welcomes World Polio Day 2019, which will be marked on 24 October to raise awareness about eradicating the condition; recognises that Rotary clubs around the UK and globally have made eradication one of their longest standing and most significant efforts, helping to immunise more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries and contributing to the reduction of polio cases by 99.9% worldwide since 1979; acknowledges that there is still much work to be done; notes that this is an entirely preventable disease, but one that, within 10 years, could be paralysing 200,000 children per year if not managed, and thanks all contributors and volunteers who dedicate their lives to eradicating polio.
