Question
To ask the Scottish Government what the infant mortality rate was in (a) 1999 and (b) 2014; what information it has how this compares with (i) 1953 and (ii) 1979, and how this compares with international statistics.
Answer
The majority of the information that was requested is published annually by National Records of Scotland in its vital events reference tables.
The infant death rates for Scotland for 1979, 1999 and 2014, and the annual average for the five years 1951-55 (which indicates the approximate level in 1953) are as follows:
