Supporting Scotland's Climate Change March

  • Submitted by: Angus MacDonald, Falkirk East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 01 December 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-15015

That the Parliament understands that over 5,000 people attended Scotland’s Climate March for climate, justice and jobs on 28 November 2015, including people from the Falkirk area; notes that the march was one of many Climate Marches taking place over the weekend in major cities in 175 countries around the world, in advance of the COP21 climate change talks taking place in Paris; understands that more than 600,000 people took part in marches around the world; further understands that the march and rally in Edinburgh was attended by politicians from all of Scotland’s major political parties, reflecting the continued cross-party support for action on climate change in Scotland; notes that the rally was addressed by a climate change activist from the Philippines, Voltaire Alferez, by a crofter from the Outer Hebrides and by a trade union representative; calls on world leaders to seek an international deal that keeps climate change well below two degrees of average global temperature change; believes that the Scottish Government, all MSPs, Scotland’s political parties and civic institutions must continue to champion the delivery of the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 as the biggest contribution that Scotland can make to international action on climate change; wishes the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform well in representing Scotland at the Paris climate change conference, and congratulates the broad Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition and its members for their role in organising Scotland’s Climate March.
