70 Years is More than Enough, No More Nuclear Weapons

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 07 August 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-13906

That the Parliament notes the gathering at Hiroshima of parliamentarians, mayors and religious leaders from around the world to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the onset of the nuclear age and the foundation of the UN from the ashes of World War Two and in the wake of the nuclear devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945; understands that, although the UN's first resolution stated that its members should aim to eliminate all weapons adaptable to mass destruction, 70 years later, over 16,000 nuclear weapons remain in the world’s arsenals, at a cost of US $100 billion annually; believes that this money could be used instead to reverse climate change, eliminate poverty and address other pressing social and economic needs, and agrees with the UN Secretary General's description of the abolition of nuclear weapons as "a common good of the highest order".
