Carers Week 2015, Building Carer-friendly Communities

  • Submitted by: Mark McDonald, Aberdeen Donside, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 May 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-13260

That the Parliament acknowledges and welcomes Carers Week 2015, which is an annual awareness campaign that takes place from 8 to 14 June and is supported by six national charities, Carers Scotland, Carers Trust Scotland, MS Society Scotland, Macmillan Cancer Support, Independent Age and Age UK; notes that, by raising awareness of carers at a national, regional and local level, the week hopes to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for; further notes that the 2015 week will see the launch of carer-friendly communities, which will aim to build communities that support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own, and to reach out to the thousands of carers in Scotland who are currently missing out on services and support; understands that there are over 759,000 carers in Scotland, that half are struggling to make ends meet and that 80% say that caring has had a negative impact on their health; further understands that, by looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member, friend or partner, carers save Scotland’s economy more than £10.3 billion each year, and believes that every effort should be made to ensure that carers receive all the support that they require to support the people that they care for.
