Trident is a Disaster Waiting to Happen, says Whistleblower

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 18 May 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-13201

That the Parliament notes with concern the claims by William McNeilly, who is a Royal Navy submariner, in his 18-page report, The Secret Nuclear Threat; understands that the report identifies 30 lapses in operational security with a Trident nuclear submarine, including a fire in the missile compartment, a missile launch test failing three times, failure to check the hatch for launching a missile and a fault alarm sounding in the missile control centre being ignored; believes that investigations must be made into what, if proven accurate, amount to serious safety breaches and that the Ministry of Defence must not disregard the report's contents, and commends what it considers the courageous actions of this whistleblower, who it believes has shown concern for the safety of the public above concerns for his own future.
