Made in Scotland

  • Submitted by: Bruce Crawford, Stirling, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 10 March 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-12613

That the Parliament notes what it sees as the significant problems faced by dairy farmers in Stirling and across Scotland due to the fall in milk prices; encourages the UK Government to work with the European Union and the Scottish Government in order to extend the labelling requirements to dairy produce to create a "Made in Scotland" label, something it considers would provide significant advantages for farmers, retailers and consumers in Scotland's Year of Food and Drink 2015, all of whom have a strong desire to be able to buy locally-produced food; believes that this would help to prevent deceptive products entering the market and using branding and identity to claim inaccurate provenance in light of current origin labelling practice, which it considers makes it difficult for consumers to make reasonable and informed choices, and further considers that improving consumer understanding of, and engagement on, the provenance of Scottish dairy products could increase sales, motivate milk processors to invest further in Scotland, provide an avenue for food manufacturers and give a significant boost to those producing the finest of Scotland’s larder.
