GoBike Petition for a 20mph Speed Limit

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 09 March 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-12588

That the Parliament notes the petition by GoBike, which calls on Glasgow City Council to set a default speed limit of 20mph for most streets in the city centre; recognises what it sees as the benefits of such a limit, which include a reduction in the risk of serious and fatal accidents by vehicles travelling at lower speeds, improvements to the environment and the encouragement of means of active travel, such as cycling and walking; recognises that a study by GoBike suggested that journey time is largely unaffected by speed reductions in busy city centres and that fuel consumption is improved by them; notes that Edinburgh City Council is implementing measures to make 80% of the city subject to a 20mph limit; congratulates GoBike on its petition, and calls on Glasgow City Council to implement the decrease in default speed limits as soon as possible.
