Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month November 2014

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 06 October 2014
  • Motion reference: S4M-11107
  • Current status: Achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament notes that November 2014 marks Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month; congratulates all of the charities, and their supporters, on the work that they do in Lothian and throughout Scotland and the rest of UK in raising awareness of the condition; notes the initiative, Purple Lights for Hope, which will aim to light up in purple as many buildings as possible on 1 November; understands that pancreatic cancer has the worst survival rate of any of the 21 most common cancers in Scotland, with just over 3% of the people diagnosed surviving five years or longer; considers shocking that these low rates have remained virtually unchanged for the past 40 years; notes that the latest figures show that 770 people in Scotland were diagnosed with the condition in 2012 and that, in the same year, 742 died from it, and further notes the view that the Scottish Government should work with charities, service providers and health professionals to improve pancreatic cancer awareness, research, diagnosis, treatment and care across the country.
