Flag Up Scotland Jamaica

  • Submitted by: Margaret Mitchell, Central Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 18 August 2014
  • Motion reference: S4M-10824

That the Parliament welcomes the recent launch of the Flag Up Scotland Jamaica project; notes that the project aims to raise awareness of the existing links between Scotland and Jamaica and to seek new ways of developing partnerships that benefit both nations; recognises that the design of the Jamaican flag is based on the Scottish flag and that it is the only other national flag to use the saltire, or St Andrew’s cross; understands that the Scottish connection with Jamaica dates from 1656 when Scottish prisoners of war, criminals and Covenanters were banished to the island and that "Campbell" is the most common surname in Jamaica; further understands that Glasgow has recognised the impact of the slave trade and slavery on the city’s industries by dedicating street names and monuments to those affected by slavery, and believes that increased links between the two countries will prove advantageous to both nations.
