Community Ownership of Sports Clubs

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 19 February 2014
  • Motion reference: S4M-09079

That the Parliament endorses the principles behind Community Ownership Week, which seeks to promote, celebrate and raise awareness of the community ownership of sports clubs and the community ownership movement across Scotland; considers that fans are typically the best long-term stewards of sports clubs and that clubs should be understood as a key part of the community; commends Scottish Fans and Supporters Direct Scotland for their work on this project as well as their broader support for the efforts made by fans' trusts at every level of the game; considers that fans across Scotland have done excellent work to push for greater involvement and ownership, including at the four SPFL clubs already owned by their fans, and believes that clear support for the fans' trust movement and leadership on this issue from the Parliament will be good for the national game at club level, both on and off the park, and at an international level.
