INEOS and Trade Unions

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 05 February 2014
  • Motion reference: S4M-08956

That the Parliament expresses its serious concern at what it considers the anti-union behaviour of INEOS at its petrochemical plant in Grangemouth; understands that it has dismissed Mark Lyon, the UK vice-chair of UNITE, for carrying out his responsibilities as the plant’s elected trade union convener; believes that INEOS is refusing to accept the role of UNITE’s shop stewards, despite them being elected by the workforce; considers that the company is acting against the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work 1998; is concerned that what it sees as this aggressive anti-union action comes at a time when INEOS is in line to receive £9 million in grants from the Scottish Government and has also applied for £150 million in loan guarantee fund support from the UK Government; believes that the UK and Scottish governments must make it clear to INEOS that actions in breach of ILO conventions and that contradict the right of an employee to be both represented by a union and to take part in union activities are not acceptable, and calls for the immediate reinstatement of Mark Lyon and a negotiated settlement between INEOS and the unions that represent its employees.
