The International Water Cooperation and Transboundary Aquifers Conference

  • Submitted by: Maureen Watt, Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 October 2013
  • Motion reference: S4M-07977

That the Parliament welcomes delegates from the International Water Cooperation and Transboundary Aquifers Conference, to be held in Glasgow on 15-16 October 2013; notes that this year is UN International Year of Water Cooperation; understands that 97% of the world’s available freshwater is stored underground and that 2.5 billion people worldwide depend solely on groundwater for their daily needs; considers that international cooperation is required to ensure that this important shared resource is managed effectively; believes that this conference will provide an important platform for debate on an increasingly urgent issue; congratulates the University of Strathclyde, CIFAL Scotland, UNITAR and others on initiating this debate, and believes that Scotland and the Scottish Government can play a key role in addressing this challenge given the country's expertise as a hydro nation.
