Concern at Self-immolations in Tibet

  • Submitted by: Maureen Watt, Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 12 June 2013
  • Motion reference: S4M-06980

That the Parliament notes with concern that at least 117 Tibetans have self-immolated, often fatally, since February 2009 and that the overwhelming majority of these incidents have taken place in Tibet itself; expresses concern at what it understands has been the state's attempts to prevent accurate reports of these actions reaching the media; condemns what it understands has been the criminalisation of family members and sometimes witnesses to the incidents, and recognises the work of the Scottish Centre for Himalayan studies at the University of Aberdeen and the Grampian Tibet Support Group in highlighting these issues and their support of cultural and educational links with Tibet and beyond.
