GM Animal Feed

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 15 April 2013
  • Motion reference: S4M-06230

That the Parliament is disappointed at the decisions by Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, the Co-Op and Tesco to no longer require suppliers to ensure that farm animals are fed a non-GM diet; understands that research studies have found GM DNA from animal feed in milk, meat and fish; notes a statement by the Soil Association that in Brazil alone there is enough non-GM animal feed to supply the whole of Europe; acknowledges a recent Food Standards Agency survey that found that 67% of consumers wanted meat, eggs and dairy labelled to show whether they came from animals fed on GM feed, and urges the Scottish Government to challenge the retailers to improve their labelling so that consumers can at least choose not to buy products from animals fed on a GM diet.
