Conflict-Free Glasgow University

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 November 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-04717

That the Parliament welcomes the Glasgow University Amnesty International Society’s Conflict-Free Campus Initiative, which aims to draw on the power of student leadership and activism to help bring about peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); welcomes the society’s call for the university to become conflict-free by avoiding the purchase of electronic goods made from raw materials sourced irresponsibly from the DRC and other conflict zones and by prioritising suppliers who do likewise; is encouraged by similar campaigns at other universities, such as St Andrews, and calls on the Scottish Government to ensure that these issues are addressed in its forthcoming Procurement Reform Bill.
