Fair Fees for International Students

  • Submitted by: Sarah Boyack, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 30 July 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-03719

That the Parliament notes the concerns of the Edinburgh University Student’ Association (EUSA) regarding the setting of tuition fees for international students; understands that the levels of such fees are determined by individual institutions and that they can vary widely; believes that these students are often unaware that they might face increasing costs in each year of study and that this makes it difficult for international students to budget for their studies; considers that fluctuating fees can act as a disincentive for international students to carry out their studies in Scotland; believes that international students increasingly contribute to Scotland both culturally and economically and that this should be encouraged; considers that it would be beneficial to institutions and international students if tuition fees for the duration of a course were known prior to its commencement, and encourages the Scottish Government to engage with EUSA to discuss its concerns.
