Celebrating and Protecting the Legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh

  • Submitted by: Anne McTaggart, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 31 May 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-03148

That the Parliament acknowledges that 7 June 2012 marks the 144th anniversary of the birth of Charles Rennie Mackintosh; remembers that Rennie Mackintosh, who was born in Parson Street in Glasgow, became one of Scotland’s most celebrated architects; recognises that buildings designed by Rennie Mackintosh, such as the world-famous Mackintosh Building of the Glasgow School of Art, are often regarded as some of the United Kingdom’s finest buildings; notes the concerns of the Rennie Mackintosh expert, Roger Billcliffe, that a number of Rennie Mackintosh buildings around Scotland are in need of repair; shares the belief that these buildings must be protected due to their cultural significance; further considers that there is a need to ensure that all Rennie Mackintosh buildings are protected and maintained to play a central role in the 150th celebrations of his birth, and calls on the Scottish Government to lead the different groups and individuals responsible for the buildings to ensure that the legacy of Rennie Mackintosh and his buildings are not left to crumble.
