SMC Rejection of Prostate Cancer Drug, Abiraterone

  • Submitted by: Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 25 April 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-02704

That the Parliament notes that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Scotland, with 2,700 new diagnoses each year; welcomes the licensing of what is considered the breakthrough prostate cancer drug, abiraterone, a life-enhancing and life-extending treatment for men in the final stages of an incurable form of the disease; observes with dismay the Scottish Medicines Consortium’s (SMC) decision not to recommend abiraterone for routine use on the NHS in Scotland on grounds of cost; notes that a patient survey conducted by The Prostate Cancer Charity and presented to the SMC showed that over 90% of Scottish respondents with direct experience of prostate cancer believe that the drug should be made available on the NHS, with no respondents expressing opposition to such an outcome; believes that men in Scotland who are dying of prostate cancer should not be faced with an additional battle to be given access to licensed treatments that can significantly reduce their pain and extend their lives, especially when these same treatments are available to men elsewhere in the UK; welcomes the decision of the drug manufacturer, Janssen, to resubmit its application to the SMC and encourages it to reduce the cost of abiraterone as it does so, and calls on the SMC to revisit its appraisal as a matter of urgency to ensure that abiraterone is made available to all men for whom it is clinically appropriate on the NHS in Scotland.
