ASH Scotland

  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 09 February 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-02001

That the Parliament highlights the work of ASH Scotland in demonstrating, through recent publications, what it considers to be the need to emphasise the importance of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and smoking in young people and the continuous detrimental impact of smoking in Scotland; understands that 24.2% of the adult population are regular smokers and acknowledges ASH Scotland’s campaigns and recommendations for reducing the prevalence of smoking; notes that these include policies such as its Refresh campaign, which is dedicated to reducing families’ exposure to secondhand smoking at home and aims to help health professionals in promoting and increasing awareness of these issues; notes that many NHS boards, including NHS Ayrshire and Arran, are engaging in the scheme; recognises the support for ASH Scotland’s campaigns from other organisations such as the British Heart Foundation (BHF); notes BHF’s research on the effect of plain packaging, which found that, based on the packet design alone, 25% of the regular smokers surveyed believed that one brand of cigarette was less harmful than another; notes that the research suggested that reducing what can be perceived as the attractiveness of tobacco products could reduce any misleading appeal of cigarettes, and understands that measures can be implemented that will significantly reduce the severity of smoking in Scotland.
