This briefing considers the definition of a “wildlife crime”, reviews the main legislation creating offences which are considered wildlife crimes, and provides some statistics on the incidence of wildlife crime (in particular the persecution of birds of prey). It then describes the main initiative of central government to combat wildlife crime. It also describes the Natural Justice review of arrangements for dealing with wildlife crime and its follow up; and concludes with a section relating the issue of wildlife crime to the current parliamentary consideration of the Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Bill.
