The new Holyrood Scottish Parliament building was officially opened on Saturday 9 October in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. In her speech, the Queen described Holyrood as a "landmark for 21st century democracy".

The day began at 10.30 am with a ceremony in Parliament Hall , followed by the "Riding", a procession down the Royal Mile to Holyrood. The Opening Ceremony itself was held in the Debating Chamber.

Thousands of spectators turned out to witness the historic day and enjoy the packed programme of entertainment and events laid on along the Royal Mile and in the Parliament's landscaped gardens.

International interest in the opening of Holyrood ensured that the Parliament's website attracted visitors from all across the world, with people logging on from Guadalajara to Glenrothes, Barcelona to Beijing , Dundee to Dar es Salaam , and Hanoi to Honolulu . The day can be watched again on our website's film archive section.
