The Scottish Parliament’s Presiding Officer, Rt Hon Tricia Marwick is to visit three Canadian legislatures as part of a visit to North America during the 2016 Scotland Week celebrations.
During her visits to Ottawa, Quebec and Nova Scotia Mrs Marwick will meet with the Speakers of the Canadian House of Commons and Senate in Ottawa, the National Assembly of Quebec and the Nova Scotia Legislature.
The Presiding Officer will take the opportunity to discuss parliamentary reform with her counterparts. Her visits will also seek to look at areas of common parliamentary interest such as the induction of new members and their development as members of Parliament.
The Presiding Officer will fly to New York to take part in the city’s colorful Tartan Day Parade, before spending the remainder of Scotland Week in Canada.
The Presiding Officer, said:
“I am delighted to be representing the Scottish Parliament during the Scotland Week celebrations in the United States and Canada.
“Scotland has strong economic and cultural links with Canada and I hope to take this opportunity to develop our relations at a parliamentary level.
“It will be an honour to take part in the spectacular Tartan Day parade on New York’s iconic 6th Avenue.”

Scotland Week 2016 is a week long programme of events in the United States and Canada, aiming to promote all things Scottish. Fifty million people across the world claim Scottish heritage - the majority being in America and Canada. The Tartan Day parade takes place in New York on 9 April.
