Ms Wendy Alexander MSP
Wendy Alexander has been an MSP since the Parliament was created and served as a Minister from 1999-2002, in a variety of roles including as Communities Minister and Enterprise, Lifelong Learning and Transport Minister, and has been Convenor of the Finance Committee. She was the Leader of Labour in the Scottish Parliament 2007 - 2008 . She was instrumental in setting up the Calman Commission. She currently serves on the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee.
Before she was elected Wendy worked in the private, voluntary and public sectors and in the 1990s she worked for Booz & Co., an international management consultancy, undertaking assignments in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia. From 1997–99 she served as Special Adviser to Donald Dewar, when he was Secretary of State for Scotland and was deeply involved in the preparation of the White Paper and the Scotland Act.
She is particularly interested in Scotland's future and how we can create a successful Scottish economy. In 2005 she co-edited 'New Wealth for Old Nations'', the book that emerged from the Allander Series on the Scottish economy. She also edited 'Donald Dewar Scotland's First First Minister' (Mainstream 2005) and was for a time a Daily Record columnist.
Wendy is married to Professor Brian Ashcroft and has two children. Away from politics she is a keen amateur ornithologist, regarding the peace and quiet as a perfect tonic to the political world.
As constituency MSP for the communities of Linwood, Renfrew and part of Paisley she and her staff run a busy constituency office.
