Justice Committee invites evidence on three Members’ Bills

The Justice Committee has calls out for written evidence on two Members’ Bills referred to it for Stage 1 scrutiny:

Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Bill – introduced by Rhoda Grant MSP
Commissioner for Victims and Witnesses (Scotland) Bill – introduced by David Stewart MSP

The deadlines for written submissions are 10 September and 24 September respectively. The Committee will be taking oral evidence on both Bills in the autumn.

• The Health and Sport Committee will take evidence on the Patient Rights (Scotland) Bill at stage 1.
• The Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee will take evidence from former Presiding Officer, George Reid, on the Strategic Review of the National Trust for Scotland.
• The Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee will take evidence on the Historic Environment (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill at stage 1.
• The Public Audit Committee will take evidence on the Auditor General for Scotland's report entitled "Review of Orthopaedic services".
• The Local Government and Communities Committee will take evidence on the Property Factors (Scotland) Bill at stage 1.

Holyrood Highlights
Interview on Holyrood HighlightsHolyrood Highlights returns this Thursday at the usual time of 12.30pm on the main chamber channel. This week's programme includes:

• a report looking at the First Minister’s Statement on the Scottish Government’s programme and the subsequent debate
• an interview with Gavin Brown MSP on his Member's Business debate Edinburgh Airport's decision to introduce drop-off charges

Today's agenda includes:
• a statement from the First Minister on the Scottish Government’s Programme, followed by a debate
• Members’ Business from Gil Paterson MSP on the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Cot Death Trust

Thursday's business begins at 9.15am and includes:
• First Minister’s Question Time at midday
• Themed Question Time on Finance and Sustainable Growth
• A Scottish Government debate on the Independent Budget Review
• Members’ Business from Gavin Brown MSP on Edinburgh Airport's decision to introduce a £1 drop-off charge.

Scottish Parliament first for Arran

Community groups and school pupils from across the island have been invited to attend the meeting alongside members of the public. Two pupils from Arran High School will present their own petitions to the committee.

The meeting will take place on Monday at Arran High School in Lamlash.

Today's education visits
Pupils writing in parliament's main hallOur education programmes are run for schools, colleges and other educational groups who are interested in finding out more about the work of the Scottish Parliament.

Today we welcome pupils from:
• Corstorphine Primary School in Edinburgh
• Mearns Academy in Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire

In addition, Parliament staff will hold classroom sessions at
• St Bartholomew's Primary School in Glasgow
• Glenboig Primary School near Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire

Committee calls for evidence on Autism Bill

The Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee is calling for evidence as part of its stage 1 scrutiny of the Autism (Scotland) Bill, introduced by Hugh O'Donnell MSP.

The deadline for submission of evidence is 8 October.

Presiding Officer welcomes athletes to Duathlon World Championships
Presiding Officer addressing the crowd at the World Championships opening ceremonyPresiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP welcomed more than 1,000 athletes from over 40 countries to Edinburgh at the weekend for the ITU Duathlon World Championships.

Mr Fergusson attended the opening ceremony in the landscaped area in front of the Scottish Parliament.

He said: "This year’s route sets off and finishes next to the Scottish Parliament and is sure to be both exciting and challenging for participants, with tough climbs around one of Edinburgh’s most distinctive landmarks, Arthur’s Seat"

It is the first time the prestigious three-day sporting event has been held in the UK. Mr Fergusson and Deputy Presiding Officer Trish Godman MSP participated in medal ceremonies throughout the weekend.
