Justice Committee

About The Committee

The primary role of the Justice Committee is to scrutinise the policies and performance of the Scottish Government and its agencies in matters related to justice. The Committee can perform this role in a number of ways, such as:

  • Considering and reporting on relevant primary and secondary legislation, including the Scottish Government’s yearly draft budget
  • Conducting inquiries or carrying out post-legislative scrutiny on any justice related topic
  • Considering petitions referred by the Public Petitions Committee and taking any such action as it deems appropriate
  • Carrying out any other justice related work as it considers appropriate

The Committee’s meetings are generally held on Tuesday mornings. Details of meetings can be found on these webpages and public gallery seats can be booked in advance from Visitor Services. The Committee can also carry out fact-finding visits around Scotland to find out more about the justice system in practice.
