Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

Written questions must be answered within 10 working days (20 working days during recess)

To ask the Scottish Executive how many children have been recorded as being admitted to hospital with asthma symptoms in each year since 2007, broken down by NHS board.

The following table shows the number of patients aged 14 and under, who had a main diagnosis asthma recorded during a hospital admission for the financial years ending 31 March 2007 to 31 March 2010.

Note: The main diagnosis position has been used to identify the patients with a hospital episode for asthma or acute severe asthma. The following ICD10 codes have been used:

J45.- Asthma

J46.- Acute severe asthma

NHS Board ‘Other’ includes patients resident outwith Scotland, with no fixed abode or residence unknown.

To ask the Scottish Executive which NHS boards have a register of children and young people with asthma.

In November 2008, Healthcare Improvement Scotland published a report on its review of performance in each NHS Board against its clinical standards for services for children and young people with asthma. On 27 June 2011, Healthcare Improvement Scotland published an update which noted that two NHS boards reported that they have registers in place (NHS Grampian and NHS Western Isles).

However, all NHS Boards now record the number of children and young people admitted to hospital with asthma symptoms and all NHS boards record data on the number of children and young people admitted or transferred to intensive care. This is an important step forward as care for this vulnerable group of children can now be better planned and the risk of emergency admission reduced.

To ask the Scottish Executive which NHS boards have developed a care protocol for children and young people with asthma.

On 27 June 2011, Healthcare Improvement Scotland published a report which noted that 5 NHS Boards reported that they have developed care protocols for children and young people with asthma. Those Boards are:

NHS Lothian

NHS Highland

NHS Tayside

NHS Grampian

NHS Forth Valley

The Healthcare Improvement Scotland report is available from Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s website: http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org. The report and its findings will be discussed at the next meeting of the National Advisory Group on respiratory conditions.
