Question

To ask the Scottish Government how much money the office of the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland has allocated toward research on (a) child and (b) adult mental health in each year since 2010-11.

Answer

The Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland does not direct or fund research, and so has funded no research into mental health.

The Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of the Scottish Government has allocated the following funding in each year since 2010-11 to the Scottish Mental Health Research Network to support high quality mental health research and recruitment to mental health research studies in Scotland. This funding is not allocated separately in support of child and adult mental health research.

2010-11

2011-12

2012-13

2013-14

2014-15

2015-16

£482,000

£483,000

£488,000

£488,000

£493,000

£493,000

CSO also provides funding opportunities for researchers in child and adult mental health through competitive grant schemes. Additionally, the CSO contributes funding to allow researchers in Scotland to apply to the Department of Health’s National Institute for Health Research programmes of research that can include applications for mental health research. Applications are also assessed through a competitive process.
