The CPA Scotland Branch hosted an inaugural conference of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) from the British Islands and Mediterranean Region (BIMR) of the CPA. The conference took place from 15 to 16 March 2014.
The theme of the conference was Enhancing the Participation of Women in Politics. The conference provided an opportunity for women parliamentarians from across the BIMR and further afield to discuss issues of mutual interest that fall within the remit of the newly established BIMR CWP Group. Discussions were structured around the following topics:
- BIMR women parliamentarians: strengths and weaknesses;
- The Commonwealth Charter – What can BIMR CWP do to promote gender equality and equity in the work of the CPA BIMR region and across the Association?
- Pre-selection and post-election challenges and opportunities; and
- The media representation of women in politics.
The CPA Scotland Branch invited delegates from Alderney, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland, St Helena, UK and Wales. Invitations were also sent to each of the seven Members of the International CWP Steering Group.
